Drink Ginger Tea, Not Ginger Ale, If You Have an Upset Stomach
Back in the day, whiskey was also used as a form of medicine, and people still drink Hot Toddies when they’re feeling under the weather. So while we don’t recommend loading up on too many when you’re sick, we can attest to the fact that a hearty bonded whiskey has the power to settle an upset stomach with a single dram. “Chew gum to encourage saliva production,” says Rachel Wong, Sleep Research Specialist at OSO, over email with Bustle.
They may need to exclude certain foods or drinks from their diet. Commercial ginger ales commonly contains carbonated water, sugar or high-fructose corn syrup, and artificial or natural ginger-flavour. Ginger content is often listed on labels in a general “natural aroma” or “natural flavoring” statement, to preserve secrecy of the complex proprietary mix of spices, fruits and other flavours used; lemon, lime, and cane sugar are the most common ingredients. Sodium bicarbonate has been described as a quick-acting antacid that provides temporary relief for symptoms, including heartburn, indigestion and upset stomach.
In order to enjoy the benefits of ginger and carbonation, make your own ginger ale at home. Boil or pickle a piece of fresh ginger, slice it up and add it to a glass of carbonated mineral water.
However, some drinks can help reduce symptoms. Juices made from citrus fruits, like oranges or grapefruits, are highly acidic. This can worsen acid reflux. The bubbles in carbonated beverages expand in the stomach. This puts pressure on the sphincter and can push stomach acid and contents back into the food pipe.
Let it steep for about 15 minutes and then slowly sip the beverage and see if that relieves your indigestion and heartburn symptoms. A study conducted by the University of Maryland Medical Center found patients given ginger following surgery to relieve nausea and vomiting had increased vomiting episodes. However, other studies by the same medical center show ginger is an effective stomach settler for people post surgery, thus the research is varied. Some people who consume large amounts of ginger ale report experiencing bloating and gas. However, these side effects are more commonly felt by people who consume ginger in a powder form than as an ingredient in a soft drink.

Canada Dry ginger ale says it’s made with “real ginger” on the label.
